In a conversation with Anirban Mukhopadhyay at TU Darmstadt, Naren Akash discussed MICCAI Student Board’s history, vision for the future and their focus on empowering students and young scientists from diverse backgrounds. He shared insights into their new initiatives, including MSB EMERGE and Ph.D Thesis Madness, which aim to support early-career researchers and create more inclusive opportunities. He also highlighted their commitment to mentorship and professional development through their engagement with the mentorship program and other special interest groups. They also talked about their plans for MICCAI 2024 in Marrakesh, including their established and popular events like the educational challenge and the academia-industry events.

  • MICCAI Society is the premier international organization for scientists in the areas of medical image computing and computer-assisted intervention and attracts world leading biomedical scientists, engineers, and clinicians from a wide range of disciplines, including computer science, robotics, physics, and medicine. The society is best known for its annual flagship event, the MICCAI conference.

  • Earlier this year, Naren Akash was elected as the President of the MICCAI Student Board (MSB).  He is also a member of the MICCAI Board Career Advancement Working Group.

  • Naren Akash was selected to be part of MSB in 2021 as Executive Officer, making him the youngest member ever, probably the only undergraduate and the first representing an Indian institute. In 2022, he served as the Professional Events Officer and in 2023, he was elected as the Vice-President. He is also the first President from a non-US and non-Central European institute and they discussed this in the conversation as well. Naren Akash has led the MSB activities at MICCAI annual conferences in Singapore (2022), Vancouver (2023) and Marrakesh (2024).
