IndicWiki project of the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH) organized Wikimedia Technology Summit 2021 on 19 and 20 November. This summit aimed at providing a platform to share and discuss the state-of-the-art tools, technologies, knowledge, and ongoing research in Indic language computing tools, text processing, text generation, document archival, rich media processing, user interfaces and help enhance and enrich the Wikimedia ecosystem in the medium and long term.
The theme for day one was Role of Technology in Community Encyclopedias – Challenges and Vision. Started with a felicitous opening keynote by Prof. Raj Reddy, progressive directions by Guest of honor, Sri. Ajay Prakash Sawhney, Secretary, MeitY and welcoming notes by program partners, State government of Telangana, and FICCI. The sessions are well-packed with the vision series talks, a thought-provoking panel discussion between wikimedia foundation members, linguists, and stakeholders on the role of wikipedia in preserving Language and Culture. The first day sessions ended with an introduction to the future of wikipedia – abstract wikipedia by Denny Vrandečić, Project Manager, abstract wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation.
The theme for the second day summit was Indian language computing in the context of Wikipedia. The second day had two sessions, session one was specially dedicated to understanding the computing and technology used in Telugu Wikipedia, and the second session focused on research and technology advancements in Indic language computing tools, text processing, text generation, etc.
Overall, the summit gave the participants a perception into the tools and technology development and research happening around community-driven knowledge databases…. And gave a perspective on areas requiring research and advanced technology development to enrich the Wikimedia ecosystem.
