IAStructE student’s chapter of Earthquake Engineering Research Centre, IIIT Hyderabad organised a one-day visit to Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI), Hyderabad on 18 January. The main objective of this visit was to make M.Tech students and Research scholars aware of the recent research activities in seismic monitoring, rock history and recording instruments. The tour began with the Seismological observatory with Dr. Vijaya Raghavan (Sr. Principal Scientist). The students saw different types of seismometers and their functioning and the analysis of seismographs from numerous earthquakes and their recording were explained to them. The students were then taken to the Rock Museum. Dr. Babu E V S S K, Chief Scientist and Dr. Vijaya Kumar T, Principal Scientist gave insights on the development and genesis of rocks during the discussion. The geophysical, 2D and 3D seismic survey devices were then demonstrated. Students were also exposed to the numerous investigational systems and instruments related to seismology and sub-structure testing. The programme concluded with a visit to the instrumentation lab which facilitates the airborne survey services for the researchers. The interaction with the CSIR-NGRI scientists during the lab visit and demonstration sessions was enjoyable and a great learning experience for the students. The tour expanded the students’ comprehension of the significance of seismic studies and geophysical investigations for the safer design of structures. The students curiously questioned the scientists to understand and comprehend what they were explaining. The visit helped the students to co-relate the theoretical concepts with the practical elements of structural earthquake engineering.
