Summer boot camp for CHD students

The Human Sciences Research Centre (HSRC) organized this year’s summer boot camp from 8 – 12 May for the 2nd and 3rd year B.Tech in Computer Science and Master of Science in Computing & Human Sciences (CHD) undergraduate students. Focusing on inculcating and developing research aptitude, the sessions covered the different aspects of social science research, with a special focus on qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

In qualitative research, Dr. Vijayata Mahendru (Independent Researcher from Bangalore) introduced the fundamentals of social science research. Her sessions focused on the problem of finding research topics, literature reviews, methodologies, and errors and biases in social science research. She critically engaged the students with classroom activities and asked them to present a brief research proposal in her concluding session. Detailed feedback was given by her and the revised proposals were submitted as assignments.

Dr. Srinivasan Ramani (Senior Associate Editor, The Hindu) discussed the themes of quantitative research and data journalism. Dr. Ramani explained how to extract and interpret data through the interesting classroom exercises. For their assignment, the students analysed and interpreted the use of NOTA in Indian elections, cricket statistics, and supreme court judgements using various computational tools. The exercise done at the summer camp resulted in the publication of an article in the Hindu on The indirect impact of T20s on Test cricket.

Dr. Isha discussed how to use archives and how archives constitute the sense of history; Dr. Radhika gave a talk on the challenges in the computational social sciences, Prof. Anirban’s session was about what data hides; and in the final session, Dr. Nazia addressed the essentials of research writing.
