Snake Awareness Workshop

Campus Security and Beautification Committee (CSBC) organised a Snake Awareness workshop for students, staff, faculty and families on campus in association with Friends of Snakes Society https://friendsofsnakes.org.in/ on 1 April 2023. Volunteers from the society shared some interesting and useful facts about snakes, busted some age-old myths and acquainted the campus community with a variety of venomous and non-venomous snakes.

The bright green tree snake, common bronze-back are some arboreal snakes; as the name suggests, red sand boa and rough-scaled sand boa burry themselves in the sand; the long rat snake, commonly known as Dhaman is a good friend of farmers, it feeds on rats and other poisonous snakes; the Russel’s viper and spectacled cobra were the two venomous snakes demonstrated that evening.

It was very relieving to know that among the 300+ species of snakes found in India only 4 venomous snakes are dangerous enough to potentially kill a human being. All others are either non-venomous or have very mild venom which can cause not more than a rash. In most European countries and Australia there are different antidotes for different kinds of venoms. But in India we have a common anti-venom for all 4 kinds of snake bites. This is available in plenty in all multi-speciality and government hospitals across Telangana and other parts of India.

Thanks to Prof. Prakash Yalla for connecting us with the Friends of Snake Society and Shaik Silar from RnD office who is a trained volunteer of the Society. Also, thanks to the Electrical team for arranging mike and speakers and Admin for other support. Special thanks to Ms. Pranjali Ponnurangam for organising this on behalf of CSBC.
