The film We have not come here to die was screened on 17 January at Tarangini Amphitheatre in memory of Rohith Vemula who took his life on this day three years ago, along with many others all over the country.
On January 17th 2016 a Dalit, PhD student and activist Rohith Vemula hung himself in University of Hyderabad. His suicide note, which argued against the “value of a man being reduced to his immediate identity” galvanized student politics in India. Over the last year thousands of students all over the country have broken the silence around their experiences of caste discrimination in Universities and have started a powerful anti-caste movement. The film attempts to track this historic movement that is changing the conversation on caste in India.
Deepa Dhanraj, Director of the film is a feminist filmmaker whose extensive filmography covers topics such as population control policies, communal politics, women and customary law, and civil liberties.
