Mr. Ross Sabolcik, Silicon Labs gave a talk on Unlocking the potential of Smart Cities With WiSun on 29 September .

Wireless connectivity is a key component of the Smart City, with options in the unlicensed bands emerging as preferred over those in the licensed cellular spectrum. Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network (Wi-SUN) is the leading IPv6 sub-GHz mesh technology for smart city and smart utility applications. Wi-SUN brings Smart Ubiquitous Networks to service providers, utilities, municipalities/ local government, and other enterprises by enabling interoperable, multi-service, and secure wireless mesh networks. His talk covered how the open standards-based Wi-SUN protocol helps build a network infrastructure that enables emerging smart city applications. He spoke about the Smart City success stories worldwide and concluded with an open forum interaction with the speaker. 

Ross Sabolcik is the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Industrial and Commercial IoT products at Silicon Labs. In this role, he leads the company’s industrial and commercial IoT business, including metering, industrial and building automation, commercial lighting, and connected retail applications, leveraging Silicon Labs’ broad portfolio of Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and sub-GHz proprietary wireless solutions, as well as MCUs and sensors. Previously he served as VP and GM for Silicon Labs’ power products, including digital isolators, isolated gate drivers, isolated FET drivers, current sensors, and PoE products revenue. Ross joined Silicon Labs in 1999 and has served in a variety of roles, including Marketing Director for the company’s sub-GHz wireless products; Director of Applications and Systems Engineering for broadcast products; and as Director of Applications Engineering for wireline products. Before Silicon Labs, he worked at National Instruments, managing product development for embedded software and board-level hardware design for precision PC instrumentation. He holds a master’s degree in computer and systems engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a BSEE from Penn State University. Ross has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Austin Chamber of Commerce (2017-2019) and Austin Habitat for Humanity (2017-present), where he is the current board chairman.
