Pulkit Velani, a Ph.D scholar from Earthquake Engineering Research Centre working under the supervision of Prof. R Pradeep Kumar represented IIITH/India by participating/contributing to Virtual Earthquake Reconnaissance on StEER: 2023 Mw 7.8 Kahramanmaras, Türkiye Earthquake Sequence. Pulkit Velani is a member and author of Virtual Assessment Structural Teams (VAST).
This joint Preliminary Virtual Reconnaissance Report (PVRR) issued by the Structural Extreme Events Reconnaissance (StEER) network and Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Learning From Earthquakes (LFE) Program:
- provides details of the February 6 Mw 7.8 and Mw 7.5 earthquakes
- describes local seismic codes and building construction practices
- compares the recorded ground shaking with the parameters used for design
- summarises the preliminary reports of damage to buildings and other infrastructure, including the disruption to the community in terms of fatalities, downtime, and economic losses
- highlights key lessons learned, with recommendations to inform the continued study of this event by the engineering community.
Due to the magnitude and impact of the earthquake, specialists across the globe participated in the production of this report.

About Structural Extreme Events Reconnaissance (StEER): It broadly serves any and all stakeholders invested in or affected by the performance of buildings and other infrastructure, including academia, public and private sectors, government, non-profit, and public-at-large. While StEER directly funds only US academic researchers on our Field Assessment Structural Teams (FASTs), we engage the broader community through our Virtual Assessment Structural Teams (VASTs), unfunded collaborations and dissemination of data and findings to a wide range of individuals and organizations responding to and affected by disasters. … (More at https://www.steer.network/about)
About Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI): It is the leading non-profit membership organization dedicated to understanding earthquake risk and increasing earthquake resilience in communities worldwide. Our diverse multidisciplinary membership includes researchers, practitioners, and students in engineering, geoscience, social science, architecture, planning, government, emergency management, public health, and policy making. EERI has been bringing people and disciplines together since 1948. .. (More at https://www.eeri.org/about-eeri)
About Virtual Assessment Structural Teams (VAST): It focus on compiling relevant information from public sources and social media immediately after the event, complementing efforts underway by other organizations such as the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) Virtual Earthquake Reconnaissance Teams (VERTs). This results in a Preliminary Virtual Reconnaissance Report (PVRR) that is collectively edited by multiple authors and is peer-reviewed by at least two of members of the StEER leadership team. Once approved, the final PDF is curated on DesignSafe with citeable Digital Object Identifier (DOI), ideally within a few days of the event and before Field Assessment Structural Teams deploy.
