This time the Students’ Parliament had introduced a 1 seat conditional reservation to encourage more female candidates in every constituency and also increased the seat limit by 1 in each constituency keeping in mind the increased strength of the new batches. The girls’ representation in the parliament is at an all-time high. The oath taking commenced on the Farewell day in the presence of graduating students and faculties.
How the Parliament works: The steps taken are rather straightforward. The responsible delegates notify the Speaker and General Secretary of any issues experienced by students in any batch. The Parliament meets within the internal committee or the whole Parliament and discusses the various facets of the problems to arrive at possible solutions. The Parliament often consults the relevant faculty members as and when necessary for guidance. For instance, only members of the Parliament’s Mess Committee will meet with the Chair, Mess Committee if the issue concerns the mess system. The same holds true for other committees. The Parliament requests the assistance of faculty members, particularly the Chair, SAC and SLC, if there are any problems that we are unable to manage, says Harshavardhan, the current General Secretary.
Pradeep Kumar Pal, the first Ph.D scholar to serve as the General Secretary of the Students’ Parliament, says that he was particularly motivated to join the organization during his stay in the campus during the lockdown of COVID-19 and learning about the structure and working of the body. He believes that the body has played a vital role in bringing normalcy to the lives of students of IIITH in the post COVID era. The Parliament has come a long way to be able to coordinate with various institute bodies to make the experience of students on campus wholesome but still has a lot of potential to do more. Chandan, the current Speaker of the Student Parliament, has been a member of the organization since his freshman year. He hopes that more students will be inspired by Pradeep’s example and join the Student Parliament. He believes that it is important for students to be involved in their community and to give back to the institution that has helped them to succeed.
The session closed with the Annual Report for the year 2022-23 being shared with students, faculty and staff and the same can be found at: http://parliament.iiit.ac.in/archives
The Parliament encourages all students to contribute towards raising the social and academic standards of the institute. The Parliament aims to continue resolving issues along with taking up initiatives for the welfare of the students and overseeing the developments of the various student bodies.
Hearty congratulations and all the very best to the new members!
