Smart City Living Lab (SCLL), an open-innovation ecosystem, an initiative from Smart City Research Centre, has been operational since May’2020. It was funded by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) and received support from the Smart City mission and the Government of Telangana. The campus is being transformed into a micro representation of a smart city for learning, research, experimentation and for showcasing new ideas and approaches through the concept of Smart City Living Lab (SCLL). When the SCLL team visited Delhi for the industry consultation, they met the Director, Smart City Mission (SCM) and requested him to visit IIITH campus. Hence on 27 August Mr. Sanjay Gupta, Director of the Smart Cities Mission, Government of India, visited IIITH with a primary goal to evaluate IIITH’s smart city living lab projects like City IoT operating Platform (ctOP) as a potential of the platforms/solutions for nationwide implementation.
Prof. P J Narayanan and Prof. Ramesh Loganathan provided an overview of the campus, admission processes, student enrolment, research centres, existing projects and campus infrastructure.
Ms. Anuradha Vattem, Dr. Sachin Chaudhari, Dr. Karthik Vaidhyanathan and Dr. Aftab Hussain presented an overview of the smart city living lab projects and the standard stack for smart city architecture developed by the lab. They highlighted specific projects such as ctOP, Digital Twin, along with other initiatives utilizing various technologies including LoRaWAN, Wi-Fi, Wi-SUN and 4G. Ms.Anuradha reiterated on how ctOP helps to solve the existing and future integration problems between the various IoT solutions in the market and Integrated Command Control Centres (ICCC) in the smart cities.
Mr. Sanjay Gupta expressed keen interest in the specific types of sensors, microprocessors, and microcontrollers employed in the lab. He was visibly impressed by the nature of the projects deployed and the focus on sustainability in almost all developments. Mr. Gupta indicated a desire to use these prototype projects as references and explore their potential for nationwide expansion.
The real-time dashboard offering comprehensive insights, and the live campus tour (Grace View) were demonstrated and well appreciated by the SCM team.
Overall, the meeting covered various aspects of smart city initiatives, sensor deployments, and many other activities and focussed on how to take this deployment to national level through collaboration.
In addition to exploring the Smart City Living Lab, Mr. Sanjay Gupta toured the entire IIITH campus. He visited the nodes deployed by the SCRC lab and delved into various deployments. Ms. Anuradha Vattem provided a comprehensive overview of each deployment.
Ms. Anuradha Vattem said that overall Mr. Gupta’s visit to the Smart City Living Lab has been successful, and it would trigger opportunities for nation wise deployment of ctOP platform. Mr. Gupta also expressed his appreciation and mentioned that the work done by the SCRC team is commendable and would like to work on the possibility of taking it to the cities.
