Mr. Amber Sinha

Mr. Amber Sinha, Senior Fellow, Mozilla Foundation gave a talk on Understanding privacy in everyday life on 21 February as part of the HSRC talk series. With privacy or its lack, occupying mainstream discourse in the last decade, the conversation revolved around what privacy means in everyday life.

Amber began by tracing the value of privacy way back, and shared stories of legal action taken against invasion of privacy in late mediaeval England. He spoke of privacy as a value, and as a right, and how its evolution has run parallel to that of technology. From nuisance suits to point-and-shoot cameras, from phone tapping to e2e encryption, the story of privacy has many facets to it. Through this session, Amber located it in its historical and socio-political context and asked what the value of privacy means today, as it conflates itself primarily with digital data. The session was followed by a vibrant question and answer session where students and faculty alike asked questions on this sensitive matter at the intersection of ethics and technology.
