Award at KETI hackathon 2023

IIITH’s Smart City Living Lab team won the best user application award in the Korean Hackathon. The goal of the hackathon was to promote oneM2M to the global developers’ community with oneM2M open source. The hackathon event, conducted for two months, was hosted by International oneM2M Hackathon Operation Team, South Korea. The goal of the hackathon was to discover IoT application service ideas using Mobius 3.0 platform. Expand the base of global users and promote the use of Mobius infrastructure through actual idea implementation. A total of 24 university teams across the globe participated in the hackathon with one of them representing IIITH’s Smart City Living Lab. Team Sustainables led by Leo J Francis along with Vaibhav Naware, Ushasri Mogadali, Gaurav and Sasidhar Varada worked on solutions for Smart Spaces to control home appliances automatically. They demonstrated this with the help of IoT and Wi-SUN technology through oneM2M. According to Anuradha Vattem, Lead Architect of the Smart City Living Lab who mentored the winning team, – The Subscription (SUB), Access Control Policy (ACP) features of oneM2M have been extensively used for this deployment. Deploying the oneM2M server instance on the border router was another unique feature being used in the project. Leo explains that Wi-SUN RF-mesh was used for the data connectivity with a border router which had oneM2M server to get data.  With its unique feature of being a self-healing network, Wi-SUN was the preferred network in this project, to control home appliances automatically with uninterrupted connectivity, states Leo. The control of the home appliances was done using an IR emitter and a PIR sensor.

The team developed a command control interface that provides remote monitoring capabilities by displaying the status of each appliance. The dashboard is highly customizable and includes information about the overall system status as well as details such as temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels. Since its inception by the Korean tech institute, teams from IIITH’s Living Lab have participated thrice in the hackathon and made a hattrick by winning this year’s award too. The Smart City Living Lab is considered as one of the few labs who have used oneM2M extensively for the smart city implementations. With this year’s Best User Application award, it only goes to show that our teams are strong contenders in future hackathons, observes Anuradha.
