Industry Consultation on NUDM

IIIT Hyderabad was invited to participate in an Industry Consultation on National Urban Digital Mission (NUDM) held on 6 and 7 August at the India Habitat Centre, Delhi, organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

With a goal to improve the delivery of urban services and strengthen the national urban digital ecosystem, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is implementing the National Urban Digital Mission (NUDM).  One of the components under the NUDM is to digitally monitor key urban services and leverage the generated data for analytics to facilitate data-driven decision-making at the state level.

The event focused on  Power of Data Exchange and Integration, City Operating System (COS), Integration with IoT Platform (ctOP) & Applications, E-Monitoring Services, Data exchange & City Intelligence Layer, State/City level applications, integration, and AI/ML implementation and deployment models.

City Operating System (COS) is a standards-based platform built together by IIITH and IISc Bangalore to provide an operating system for cities which can be used in cities where multiple stakeholders can be connected with a seamless interface between sensor/IoT vendors/Data providers to ICCC/Data Consumers

The consultation brought together experts from the ICT and Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) sectors to explore how data generated by these technologies can be leveraged to enable data-driven decision-making and policy formulation at the state level.

The inaugural session included an introduction, a welcome by Sanjay Gupta, Director,  NIUA, and an overview of NUDM, followed by context setting by the Joint Secretary and Mission Director of the Smart Cities Mission.

Key topics discussed included data exchange and integration with City Operating Systems (COS) and IoT platforms by IISc Bangalore and IIITH teams, with further sessions dedicated to e-monitoring services for Solid Waste Management, Water and Wastewater Monitoring, Flood Monitoring, and Street Light Monitoring by relevant stakeholders with the event highlighting the importance of a comprehensive digital ecosystem for urban management. It was also discussed that the IIITH Smart City Living Lab shall be also considered as the live testbed for evaluating the various smart city solutions and platforms.

IIITH team Ms. Anuradha Vattem, Prof. Ramesh Loganathan and Ms.Ushasri Mogadali had the opportunity to participate in the workshop and were able to share their expertise on City IoT Operating Platform (ctOP), a lightweight solution designed to follow the oneM2M standard, which enhances interoperability in smart city environments. The conversation highlighted ctOP’s features, including user authentication and access control for oneM2M-based IoT ecosystems, along with its intuitive interface for managing IoT devices and network security. The platform’s goal of revolutionising IoT device deployment in smart cities through standardised data exchange and a user-friendly interface was emphasised.

Additionally, the discussion focused on the importance of adopting standardised data formats and protocols, which allow cities to seamlessly integrate and analyse data from various vendors within a unified platform. They also explored different communication protocols; particularly wireless protocols like Wi-SUN, LoRaWAN, etc. specifically designed for smart cities.

The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, followed by a heartfelt thank you from the director of the Smart Cities Mission. During this session, the IIITH Smart City Living Lab Team could network with various other smart city stakeholders.
