India HCI 2019

IIIT Hyderabad hosted the  Leading Human-Computer Interaction Research Conference, India HCI 2019 in co-operation with SIGCHI & ACM  from 1 – 3 November. This year the theme was Agents and Agency: HCI in the age of Machine Intelligence. The programme included cutting edge research papers, posters, demos, student research & design tracks.

The domain of HCI is being significantly shaped by intelligent, autonomous and self-learning systems and technologies. The HCI and Design communities in both academia and industry are seeking an innovative competitive edge by investing in AI-driven machine intelligence. HCI has long recognized agency, the sense of human freedom to manipulate interactions with technology. Today, as our everyday agentive interactions increase the involvement of technology there is a need to examine the possible intersections between technology, human agents and the rise of intelligent systems in HCI. As we explore the overlap between HCI, the sense of agency, and interactions among humans and computers, an overarching consideration is to discuss the potential implications of self-learning systems for interaction design in a community of technology users and intelligent machine interfaces.

India HCI 2019 focused and examined the interplay of human and machine agency in an increasingly complex world of intelligent HCI. The participants discussed and built models of human-computer interdependency and new spaces of opportunity in HCI. As machines traverse the realms of intelligent decision making and predictive analytics what are the ways to reimagine human agency as an influential and invaluable force in HCI system building?

India HCI  gave participants deeper insights about agents and agency in the times of AI-driven intelligence. At a time when human-machine interfaces permeate the breath of situated to virtual and augmented reality, the conference endeavors to extend inter-disciplinary capacities to address the question of the agency of humans and machines as intertwined capabilities.
