IIIT-H Research on ACM Cover

Prof. Nimmi Rangaswamy and her student, Pratyay Suvarnapathaki, have been featured on the cover story of Interactions, one of ACM’s leading publications showcasing Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) research from around the world.

Their qualitative research explores the gap between the abstractions of worker-facing platform applications and the everyday realities workers navigate to earn a living. The team presented the initial findings at the HCI Across Borders Workshop during CHI 2025, highlighting the often-invisible labor involved in idle waiting, repetitive workflows, and the interpretive work required to manage uncertainty in platform-based work.

The study finds that current platform interfaces function as opaque managerial systems, requiring workers to continually infer how algorithms make decisions. While complete algorithmic transparency may not be feasible, since opacity often forms part of a platform’s competitive advantage — the researchers propose more transparent “glass box” models. These include bounded explanations for order allocation, clearer indicators of factors influencing performance ratings, interfaces that adapt to workers’ demonstrated preferences (such as preferred restaurant clusters), and real-time feedback mechanisms for reporting routing issues, geographic inaccuracies, and recurring delays.
