Best paper nomination award at ICVGIP-2023

Research work on Global Space Modelling Of Biological Processes With Cross-sectional Data by Prof. Jayanthi Sivaswamy and her students – J Thottupattu and  Venky P was awarded the best paper nomination award at ICVGIP 2023 – 14th Indian Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing held from 15 – 17 December 2023 at IIT Ropar.

Here is the summary of the research work as explained by the authors:

Deriving a relationship between sequentially acquired images is of interest to the medical community to understand various growth/disease progression patterns. This is generally posed as a regression problem, and the sequential data is modeled as a deformation path applied to an initial image. In a cross-sectional setting of this problem, the data comprises scans (of an organ) of different individuals taken at different time points. The initial image selection tends to bias the final regression path. In this paper, we propose a framework to define the relationship between the given set of sequential images in their global image space. This approach aids the preservation of global trends in the sequential relationship while reducing the effect of inter-subject/cross-sectional variations. The proposed framework applies to any path modeling, and we demonstrate the proposed framework using a piece-wise regression model and present the results of experiments on scans (MRI) of the human brain, heart, and bird embryo. The results show that the proposed method helps to derive a bias-free Global space regression, unlike the SOTA methods for cross-sectional data.

The Indian Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics and Image Processing (ICVGIP) is India’s premier conference in Computer Vision, Graphics, Image Processing and related fields. Starting in 1998, it was a biennial international conference till 2021, providing a forum for the presentation of technological advances and research findings in these areas. ICVGIP 2023, the 14th conference in this series, was organized by IIT Ropar in association with the Indian Unit for Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence (IUPRAI), an affiliate of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). ICVGIP will be held annually from 2022 due to the huge growth in the community. ICVGIP is dedicated to fostering the community of computer vision, graphics and image processing researchers and enthusiasts in India and abroad.
