The Cultural Wing of Students Life Committee (SLC) celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi on 2 October. Inaugural address was given by Prof. P J Narayanan. This was followed by a talk by the invited speaker Prof Madhu Prasad on Work/Craft as the Medium for Learning: Liberating Education for Social Change, Q&A session and events by students. Dr. Indranil Chakrabarty was the faculty coordinator of the event.
Prof. Madhu Prasad retired from the department of philosophy, Zakir Husain Delhi College, University of Delhi. Other than being a popular and admired teacher of philosophy, she has been an activist for more than five decades, participating in struggles for liberation and equality. She has been actively involved with issues of education policy for more than two decades. She has been involved in the teachers movement and has fought for equality and universal access for every child in the country by advocating establishment of the Common (Neighbourhood) School System. She is one of the founding members and a member of the Presidium of the All India Forum for Right to Education (2009), a body of academicians and activists committed to the cause of developing a rational and democratic education system based on promoting the constitutional values of secularism, equality and social justice through the completely free and compulsory Common (neighbourhood) School System. She is the editor of the forum’s magazine, ‘Reconstructing Education’. She has written fairly regularly on problems of education and critique of education policy. She has traveled to all corners of the country participating in conferences, holding workshops and meetings, inspiring rights’ activists, and young people.
