Fingerprints 75 billion-class recognition problem

Prof. Anil Jain, Michigan State University gave a talk on Fingerprints 75 billion-class recognition problem on 23 October where he elaborated on the success of fingerprints in law enforcement and forensics coupled with growing concerns related to security, financial fraud, and identity theft that have generated renewed interest in fingerprint recognition. Fingerprint-based authentication is ubiquitous in unlocking mobile phones, mobile payment, international travel, and accessing social benefits. His talk gave an insight about the challenging issues pertaining to fingerprint uniqueness and permanence, image quality, spoof detection, robust matching and template security.

Prof. Jain is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at Michigan State University. He has received Guggenheim fellowship, Humboldt award, Fulbright fellowship, IEEE W. Wallace McDowell award, and IAPR King-Sun Fu Prize. His research interests include pattern recognition, computer vision and biometric recognition.
