Dr. Raman Saxena

Dr. Raman Saxena has joined the Software Engineering Research Center (CSTAR) as a Professor of Practice. He obtained his Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. His Ph.D thesis focussed on exploring the Mobile Financial Services (MFS) through the lenses of Human-centered Design, HCI, Financial Inclusion, Urban Poverty, Mobile  Financial Technology  within the context of Urban Poor in India.  His research areas are human-centered design, HCI, interaction technologies, human-behaviour research, cognitive ergonomics, intersection of tech & design, future/smart tech & new product development, fin tech (MFS), remote healthcare, IoT, wearable tech, design & democracy, democratic design, and design thinking/HCD evangelism for socio-economic impact.

Dr. Saxena is a Human-centered Design (HDC) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)  professional with a passion for “Humanising Technology” to empower the human and ensure “they are controlling  technology rather than the technology controlling them”.  His research and practice focus on understanding the cognitive/mental models and socio-cultural context of the intended users and applying the Design Thinking combined with HCD and Empathy to minimise the cognitive loading and  chances of human error,  leading to better fit between the user and products and higher acceptance and usability. 

After completing technology education as Electronics and Communication Engineer and serving industry for around 6 years, Dr. Saxena decided to pursue further education in Industrial Design/Product Design at  NID Ahmedabad and then went to Germany under a scholarship by the federal govt. of Germany and EEU to pursue an advanced program in Product Planning, Design & Development. 

He has served around 25 years as Technology & Design Leadership in various IT and Software organisations including Siemens, Nokia, Human Factors International (HFI) Inc., Network Programs, and CA Technologies (Computer Associates) managing cross -cultural teams of HCI/UX designers, IT/software professionals, Human Factor and Usability Engineers,  Researchers and Product/Service Designers, in India, USA, Germany, Finland, Denmark and China. 

 In 2013 he began his career in academics as full-time visiting professor at IIT Kanpur and then extending teaching engagement with IIM Bangalore, AUD Delhi, Kashmir University, IIITDM-Jabalpur.  Currently he continues to be associated with IIT Kanpur as an Adjunct Professor.

Dr. Saxena also runs a non-profit forum (USID Foundation) to evangelise the tech and design enabled social impact. He is also exploring startups initiatives in the space of skilling and micro-credit needs related to food, education and healthcare for low income population. He is  actively involved with the Startups/Incubators including DLabs (ISB Hyderabad)  Power of Idea by  (IIM-A & Economic Times), Design Innovation Centre at IIT Kanpur and  ACIIE at AUD Delhi.
