Devika Bej, UG1-CSD was one of the top 20 winners in the 17 – 18 age category at the Desmos Global Art Contest held online from mid November 2022 to mid January 2023. Devika Bej was also the only entry
from India to be chosen in the top 20 across all age categories.
Desmos organizes Desmos Global Art Contest to celebrate creativity using mathematics. People all over the world make beautiful artworks using graphs of different mathematical equations. Devika’s artwork was a graphical replication of mother Kali’s idol from Dakshineswar with some personal design changes. Devika has added a chant closely connected to mother Kali’s beeja mantra – Om Kreem Kalloi Nomoh.
The graph consists of equations and formulae used in regular maths. The concept of rotation of axes has been used extensively. The mantra was written using Bezier curves. Each colour used in the graph is custom-made and declared separately. The highlight of the graph work is that the colours of the text change gradually and smoothly.
