November 2022
Dr. Nazia Akhtar presented a paper on Hatred, Violence, and Humanity: The Surrender of a Young Girl in Ashokamitran’s – The Eighteenth Parallel (1977) at a conference on Creating a World without Violence for Women and Girls: The Role of the Arts, organized by the Seamus Heaney Centre, Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland from 25 – 26 November. In her talk Dr. Akhtar spoke about the representation of violence against girls and women during the partition of India and Pakistan in Ashokamitran’s novella The Eighteenth Parallel (1977; originally written in Tamil). It considers the text’s depiction of the burden of humanity falling on India’s girls.
The two-day conference brought together activists, creative practitioners, academics and survivors to explore how they can make the best use of literary, performing and visual arts in the struggle to end violence against women and girls.
