The Assamese celebrate it with great joy and merriment irrespective of caste, creed or religious belief as they welcome their traditional New Year. The three main Bihu festivals popular in Assam are – Rongali Bihu, Kongali Bihu and Bhogali Bihu. This joyous dance is performed by young boys and girls and includes brisk dancing steps and rapid hand movements. They wear traditional Assamese clothes, men wear dhoti-gamocha and women wear mekhala-chador. They dance to the beats of various instruments like Dhol, Taal, Pepa, Toka, Baanhi, Xutuli and Gogona. The songs sung speak about happy harvests, love, remembrance of loved ones, etc.
