Art work by UG1 Students

December 2022

UG1 students working under the supervision of Puja Chauhan made self-portraits or a still life as part of their collage coursework. Collage is one of the five art courses offered to first year students. Other courses offered include music, dance, painting and sculpture. The first year batch is divided into five groups based on their preference.

Collage is an art form  where the artists cut copy paste images from available or mass-produced print media like newspaper, magazines, packaging materials, bus tickets and so on to create new compositions. It is a fairly new form of art compared to painting or sculpture.  It was popularized by modern artists like Picasso and Georges Braque. However, many people don’t know, it is a creative activity that many aristocratic women in Europe first started to explore in the late 1920s when photography and photographic images were available for purchase.

During this class students first made a pencil drawing – either a self-portrait or a still life. They used newspapers for their colour palette.  If we think of the visual elements in newspapers, we will find it monotonous, black & white, So during this class, the students took it up as a challenge and explored the visual possibility offered by newspaper

The idea behind the course was for students to learn to work with the most mundane materials/ possibilities around them. Because the world we are born in is not a blank canvas. There is always a context and history behind everything.

Here are some works made in the collage class.
