Bioregionalism in India—The Sundarbans Story

Dr. Rama Chandra Pillutla participated in a three-day certificate course titled “Bioregionalism in India—The Sundarbans Story,” organized by the Academy for Conservation: Science and Sustainability Studies at the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru. The programme was conducted in collaboration with DRCSC, West Bengal, from 19–21 February.

Bioregionalism—both a philosophy and an environmental framework—advocates that societies thrive when organized around naturally defined ecological regions. The course brought this perspective to life through an immersive engagement with the Sundarbans Delta, a dynamic restoration landscape known for its mangroves, freshwater swamp forests, and the Royal Bengal tiger.

Through a rich blend of lectures, case studies, films, poetry, theatre, and experiential field visits, participants engaged with local communities, scientists, and restoration practitioners. The programme offered a deeply place-based learning experience, examining how bioregional thinking can inform regenerative futures in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource challenges.
