The Cultural Wing of Student Life Committee organized a flagship event Sitar recital by Padma Shri Awardee Ustad Shahid Parwez, one of the most distinguished maestros of Indian classical music on 6 January at KRB Auditorium. He was accompanied by Pt. Gourisankarji on Tabla
Shahid Parvez Khan, born on 14 October 1954, is one of India’s most celebrated classical sitar maestros and a distinguished exponent of the Imdadkhani (Etawah) Gharana. Representing the seventh generation of this illustrious lineage, he is widely regarded as its foremost contemporary torchbearer.
Renowned for the lyrical depth and expressive nuance of his raga improvisations, Shahid Parvez Khan is especially admired for his mastery of Gayaki Ang—a style of sitar playing that emulates the phrasing and emotional richness of vocal music. This evocative approach, which translates loosely as the “singing style,” lends his performances a rare blend of technical brilliance and melodic sensitivity.
The Gayaki Ang tradition was revived and redefined for the modern concert stage by the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan. Carrying forward this rich legacy, his nephew Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan has not only preserved the tradition but also expanded its global reach, earning acclaim from audiences and connoisseurs worldwide.
