COMPASS 2024

Tanmay Goyal, a dual degree student of CSE working with Dr Nimmi Rangaswamy presented a paper  on Unveiling Two-Fold Gamification: Exploring the Agency of Delivery Workers in Urban India  at  COMPASS 2024  held at IIIT Delhi from 8 to 11 July. The theme of COMPASS 2024 was Computing and Sustainable Societies. Here is the summary of the research work as explained by the authors:

The evolving landscape of gig labour, particularly within food delivery platforms, has been influenced by a shift towards algorithmic management, emphasising performance metrics as a daily burden to be carried through delivery work. Through a study of Indian food delivery agents, our paper suggests an emerging gamification culture between delivery platforms and workers. Agents gradu- ally yet consistently adapt to stringent algorithmic management to overcome everyday work’s precarity. Despite the challenges of performance pressure on food delivery labour, we capture the daily rhythms and routines of delivery work punctuated by flashes of agenting, revealing small capacities to make choices and influence work outcomes. This research work will be  published in the ACM library.

Dr. Nimmi Rangaswamy was an invited speaker for a panel discussion on  Exploring Challenges and Future Trajectory of AI Governance at COMPASS 2024 organised by ACM Special Interest Group on Computing and Society (SIGCAS) and the ACM Special Interest Group in Computer Human Interaction (SIGCHI). The panel  explored the emerging social, political, and economic concerns around development and deployment of AI as a general-purpose technology. The panellists deliberated on themes including governance and regulatory challenges, epistemic challenges, and sustainability challenges presented by AI.
