Evening Raga – Classical Music Concert

As part of the 25th Silver Jubilee Celebrations, the cultural wing of SLC and Sanskriti Foundation jointly organized a classical music concert series called Evening Raga on 4 September at the amphitheater. Dr. Annavarapu Ramaswamy, violinist was the chief guest.

The concert began with felicitation to Vidwan D V Mohana Krishna, followed by a vocal concert by him. He was accompanied by Vidushi Gayatri Sivani on violin and Vidwan Karra Srinivas on mridangam.

The main objective of this series is to promote Indian classical music amongst the youth. In this series, the artists, accompaniments, and the compositions are carefully chosen to showcase the richness, diversity, and the deep philosophy of Indian music.

The concert was in memory of Guru G V Ramakumari who was a vocal lecturer at G V R Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada for nearly 20 years, endearing herself to her countless students and admirers with her kind hearted and dedicated nature. She was an ideal teacher of vocal and violin and also a charitable person who gave all she had to help many people including students who were unable to pay their college or school fees. Ramakumari was a disciple of the legendary guru Parupalli Ramakrishnaiah Pantulu and inherited her guru’s style of singing and teaching.

Sri D V Mohana Krishna is born into a family of artists and is the grandson of Late Nataraja Sekhara, D V Subba Rao, the renowned Dramatist and the son of Late D V Subrahmanyam and Kusuma.

Sri Mohana Krishna showed exceptional talents in music right from his childhood. He underwent training in classical music under Dr. Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna in the gurukula system. He did his Music Diploma from Andhra University and passed out with first class distinction. He is exceptionally talented in Carnatic music. He is equally proficient in light music as well as light classical music. He has given more than 2000 vocal concerts in India and performs regularly in cultural festivals conducted by various organizations. Winner of many awards & honours Sri D V Mohana Krishna now lives in Hyderabad and is presently working as an ‘A’ grade artiste at All India Radio. 

Annavarapu Ramaswamy is an Indian classical violinist from Andhra Pradesh, India. He is known for his contributions in the field of Carnatic music. He is noted for inventing new Ragas and Talas such as Vandana Raga, Sri Durga Raga and Tinetradi Tala and Vedadi Tala. In 2021, he was awarded India’s fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri in the Arts and Literature category. He was awarded the Fellowship of Andhra Pradesh Sangeeta Akademi in 1983.
