Student Life Council, IIIT-Hyderabad organized Three Daughters, a two day workshop from 2 – 3 February on dramatic arts. It was conducted by Nasreen, an actor and teacher at theatre organization Samahara. During the two days, the participants were taught techniques of improvisation and performance dynamics. Participants received lessons on how different parts of a play make a significant difference in building scenes and moments. Nasreen was assisted by Malavika Priyadarshini.
Body-Object-Space-Story: This workshop explored the body-object relationship and its dynamics within performance space as well as the relationship of the object with the body beyond daily utilitarian purposes.
From the real self to the dramatic self: This workshop was a journey of an individual from the real self to the dramatic self through a series of exercises focusing on body, breath, agility, flexibility, inner intensity, gradation of energy, action, reaction and connections.
The workshop was followed by a play – Ek Akeli Aurat by Parul Gupta Hirani. Ek Akeli Aurat is a testimony to the human spirit and demonstrates what we are all capable of doing when pushed to the limit of our patience. Such a bold, beautiful and brave character is seldom found in society. Yet, the question remains, will she be able to live freely and break shackles? Will she get the love and care she desires and deserves?
The play revolved around a lady who is talkative and loves company but is confined in a house by her chauvinistic husband. She feels lonely and looks for company with all sorts of means in the house. She has two children and a perverted brother-in-law who is restricted to a wheelchair. She keeps chatting, exclaiming with her neighbour demonstrating her emotions with extreme measures to save her sanity. She is haunted by a prank caller, a money lender, a young lover and also exploited by her brother-in-law. Anger, frustration, restlessness, hope, regret, guilt and determination define her inner turmoil.
