Dr. Vishnu Sreekumar and the Cognitive Science Lab members organized a DIY Neuroscience: BCI/HCI Workshop 2023 with the support of IHub-Data (coordinated by Dr. Manasa K) in collaboration with Upside Down Labs. This one-day DIY Neuroscience workshop was conducted at IIITH on 28 January with an attempt to introduce biopotential signals such as EMG, ECG, EOG & EEG to IIITH students under the guidance of a five member team consisting of Mr. Deepak Khatri, Mr. Dikshant Dahiya, Mr. Shivam Khatri, Mr. John Vivek and Ms. Bhawna Sehgal from Upside Down Labs. Mr. Deepak Khatri, Founder & Head of Engineering, Upside Down Labs opened the session with his start-up journey which inspired the audience. He then explained the basics of the DIY kit accessories such as BioAmp EXG sensors, bands, electrodes, cables & gel and demonstrated biopotential signals, filtering, and recording. The team then guided the students in signal processing, algorithms, and visualisation software for various biopotential signals such as ECG, EEG, EOG & EMG. At the end of the session, the team came up with some cool and interesting DIY neuroscience games such as measuring muscle strength, muscle-controlled games, and controlling someone else’s arm leveraging your own brain signals.
This workshop brought together students, faculty of Cognitive Science Lab, and IHub-Data researchers who were engaged by the Upside-Down Labs throughout the day. The Cognitive Science Lab plans to conduct more such workshops periodically with the support of students who participated in this workshop with the intention of introducing neuroscience in a fun and engaging way to not just IIITH students but also to school students in and around Hyderabad. The entire team thanked IIITH Data IHub Foundation for its financial support.
