Researchers in neuro-cognitive sciences at IIIT Hyderabad conducted an online workshop on Teaching the Learning Brain 2.0 – Make learning more effective with the latest developments in cognitive research from 10 – 17 February. The researchers introduced aspects on the cognition of learning and factors supporting it. The workshop was relevant to teachers interacting with children of grades 1 to 8, researchers in education psychology, cognitive science/neuroscience, education NGOs and parents.
The first workshop which was conducted in December of 2019, researchers and educators provided insights into how the child’s brain processes language, understanding complexity in math, conditions like autism/dyslexia, the role of music and physical activity. While this edition of the workshop focused on understanding how young children learn math, science, language, music, critical thinking and more. And the research team continued the discussion with newer perspectives on learning and teaching processes.
The workshop tried to bring the results of research into classroom teaching. A school teacher faces the challenge of preparing classes that engage a class with the same age children, but with differential learning curves topic-wise, dissimilar conceptual understanding, with gaps in skills and disparate external (non-school) factors influencing them. In addition, the child’s physical and emotional state affects the learning curve. Given the complexity, it is important for teachers to understand the brain from the neurodevelopment aspect to design lessons appropriately and build an atmosphere of intellectual safety and trust to address the outliers (over-/under-performers) too. This workshop was the first of its kind to address most if not all of the concerns of learning in an educational system as present in the Indian context.
