IIITH students rank 2nd at WAT 2021

Sourav Kumar,  5th year dual degree student working under the supervision of Prof. Dipti Misra Sharma and Salil Aggarwal, 4th year dual degree student working under the supervision of Prof. Radhika Mamidi  ranked second globally at a Workshop on Asian Translation (WAT 2021) shared task.

The task covers 10 Indic Languages (Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu) and English. Team IIITH was evaluated on 20 translation directions (English-Indic and Indic-English). Individually, Indic languages are resource poor which hampers translation quality but by leveraging multilingualism and abundant monolingual corpora, the translation quality can be substantially boosted. The purpose of this task was to validate the utility of MT techniques that focus on multilingualism and/or monolingual data.
